Saving the Planet showcased at ICEE4 in Ahmedabad TVEAP project presented to the global ESD community TVE Asia Pacific's Saving the Planet regional project was showcased at a major international gathering of people engaged in education for sustainable development.
Saving the Planet is TVEAP's principal activity as a regional Centre of Excellence (COE) in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The regional organisation – with over a decade’s experience in communicating sustainable development using the mass media and new media -- was selected for this status in late 2006 after a competitive process. The 4th International Conference on Environmental Education, held in Ahmedabad, India, from 24 – 28 November 2007, was attended by 1586 participants from 97 countries. It was hosted by TVEAP's long-standing partner, the Centre for Environment Education. During the conference, TVEAP was part of a session that presented the ACCU-UNESCO Asia Pacific ESD programme titled 'Supporting grassroots initiatives in ESD and linking it with global partnerships'. The session brought together representatives from two ESD related regional networks: the Centres of Excellence (COEs) – of which TVEAP is one – and the innovation projects (IPs). The session comprised presentations by two IPs (from China and Nepal) and two COEs (Thailand Environmental Institute and TVE Asia Pacific).
The year's highlights included selecting winning ESD initiatives through an open, competitive public nomination process, and conducting a communication capacity building workshop for representatives of the winning organisations. "We have followed a participatory process in both these steps, and are now moving into location filming and producing video films on each of the six chosen ESD projects," Manori said. "This will lead to an Asian regional TV series produced to international broadcast standards during 2008." The session, facilitated by Ms Shibao Tomoko, Director of ACCU's Education Division, saw lively discussion and debate on the best ESD practices at national and regional level.
This was the second major international gathering where the five regional Centres of Excellence came together. Besides TVEAP, the other four COEs are: Asia South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education (ASPBAE), Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) and University of the South Pacific (USP) based in Fiji. The 4th International Conference on Environmental Education was co-sponsored by UNESCO and UNEP and hosted by the Government of India. The Conference focused at how Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) can partner and strengthen each other towards building a sustainable future. The event marked the fourth international conference in the journey of EE since the first such conference held in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1977. It helped setting the roadmap for progress through the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). TVEAP Director/CEO Nalaka Gunawardene served on the International Advisory Committee of the Conference.
