TVE Asia Pacific to co-sponsor Asia Media Summit 2006

TVE Asia Pacific LogoTVE Asia Pacific has joined a galaxy of international and regional organisations and companies as a co-sponsor of Asia Media Summit  2006.

The Summit, taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 29 to 31 May  2006, is the largest annual gathering of media managers and senior   broadcast professionals from across the Asia Pacific and beyond.

Organised by the Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), it is expected to draw over 400 decision-makers, media professionals, scholars and stakeholders of news and programming from Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, Middle East and North America. Almost all regional and International Broadcasting Unions and Associations support AMS 2006.

The Summit is to be opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Asia Media Summit 2006Over three days, leading broadcasters, media researchers and media activists will discuss and debate a broad range of topics organised under nine sessions. This includes media independence, challenges of media convergence, local content for global audiences, and media ethics.

Co-sponsoring the Summit is a milestone for TVE Asia Pacific -- a regional leader in communicating development issues using television and video.

“We are delighted to collaborate with AIBD in this important event which will address hard and topical issues that confront today’s broadcasters,” said Nalaka Gunawardene, Director and CEO of TVE Asia Pacific.

Among the other co-sponsors are UNESCO, UNDP-APDIP, ITU, Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) and China Central Television (CCTV).

At the Summit, TVE Asia Pacific would be associated with two activities.

It will provide inputs for plenary session 3, on ‘Local Content for Global Audience: An uphill battle? – Advocacy of the Millennium Development Goals: Role of Broadcasters’. For this, TVE Asia Pacific has brokered a partnership with the United Nations ESCAP (UNESCAP, the UN Secretariat’s regional arm), whose head, UN Under Secretary General Kim Hak Su will be a session speaker. (See box for introduction to this session.)

Together with the Global Knowledge Partnership, TVE Asia Pacific is also organising a day-long pre-Summit workshop on 28 May 2006 on ‘ICTs for prosperity: potential and challenges for broadcasters’. This will discuss some practical aspects of how broadcasters can pursue digital opportunities to create a better, healthier and safer world. Outcome of this workshop will feed into the main Summit.

This is the second time TVE Asia Pacific is participating in Asia Media Summit. In 2005, CEO Nalaka Gunawardene was a plenary speaker, and the Children of Tsunami media initiative was unveiled there.

Over 300 broadcast managers and CEOs from 60 countries attended the 2005 Summit, representing more than 120 organisations.

Local Content for Global Audience: An uphill battle? Advocacy of the Millennium Development Goals: Role of Broadcasters

In recent years, producing and distributing media content has become easier and relatively cheaper thanks to new digital technologies. While this has led to a boom of grassroots level productions, many don't travel beyond the country of origin. It remains a big challenge to produce locally authentic content that also meets strict quality criteria of the global market. Equally deserving attention is to ensure that global messages be delivered in local voices so that whatever imbalances in information flows between north and south, east and west, is not inherited by the new information order. Against this backdrop, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), an international blueprint for human development in the 21st century, provide a useful framework for reporting local issues in a shared, global context. Broadcasters at local, national and regional levels can find the words and images that will ultimately shape public policy agendas.
