| Annoucement |
| “Broadcasters were instrumental in galvanizing international support in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami, and have been equally active in covering the earthquake in Pakistan. I urge you to find the words and images that will draw attention to the silent, daily tsunami of poverty, hunger, disease and environmental degradation.” |
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan made this plea when speaking at World Electronic Media Forum (WEMF), which was part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Tunis, Tunisia, in November 2005. Both WEMF and WSIS recognised the key role of broadcasters in bridging the digital divide, and in bringing about an information society in which all citizens are included and can participate.
Asia Media Summit 2006 is one of the first high level global gatherings of media managers and practitioners since WSIS. The Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) and TVE Asia Pacific (TVEAP) will take advantage of this gathering of minds to discuss some practical aspects of how broadcasters can pursue digital opportunities to create a better, healthier and safer world.
The pre-Summit workshop on 28 May 2006 recognises that broadcasting is an integral part of information and communication technologies (ICT). At the same time, broadcasters can help broaden and deepen the discussion on how other ICTs -- which includes fixed and mobile phones, computers and Internet -- can add value to lives, livelihoods and society.
Objectives
| Specifically, this workshop seeks to: |
| • |
explore how broadcasters can promote ICTs for economic prosperity through appropriate journalistic coverage of ICT policies, practices, issues and constraints; |
| • |
discuss how broadcast media can play a role in promoting tolerance among cultures, countries and regions; |
| • |
identify practical constraints and limitations in the coverage of ICT issues in the broadcast media, with a view to addressing them; and |
| • |
nurture partnerships between broadcasters and ICT players in government, industry, academia and civil society. |
|
The workshop will be conducted in English.
Workshop content
The workshop will be conducted in an interactive manner, including presentations, film screenings and group discussions.
Content will be developed by resource persons drawn from South Asia and Southeast Asia, who will bring different perspectives and experiences from broadcasting, media research, advocacy and technology backgrounds.
The draft workshop agenda will be placed online in early May 2006.

All participants will receive a set of print and video material from the co-organisers. This will include ICT related publications from GKP and ICT-related video productions made or distributed by TVEAP.
